Terpenes

Terpenes are aromatic compounds found in the essential oils plants. They play a significant role in shaping the plant's aroma, flavor, and therapeutic effects.

Terpenes are present in many  plants and fruits and contribute to their characteristic scents and taste. There are over 100 different terpenes identified in the hemp (cannabis sativa) palnt and each strain may contain a unique combination and concentration of these compounds. 

Common hemp (cannabis satvia) terpenes include:

• Myrcene: Often found in high quantities in indica strains, myrcene has a herbal, earthy aroma. It is believed to have sedative and relaxing properties.
• Limonene: As the name suggests, limonene is responsible for the citrusy aromas. It is associated with uplifting and mood-enhancing effects and is commonly found in sativa strains.
• Pinene: This terpene has a distinct piney scent and is found in pine needles, rosemary, and other coniferous plants. It may have potential anti-inflammatory and bronchodilator properties
• Caryophyllene: Known for its spicy and peppery aroma, caryophyllene is the only terpene that also acts as a cannabinoid by interacting with the body's endocannabinoid system. It may have potential anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties.
• Linalool: Linalool is commonly found in lavender and has a floral, lavender-like scent. It is associated with calming and relaxing effects and may help alleviate anxiety and stress.
• Humulene: With an earthy and woody aroma, humulene is also found in hops. It is believed to have potential anti-inflammatory and appetite suppressant properties.

The potential health benefits of sativa terpenes include:

• Pain relief: Certain terpenes, such as myrcene and beta-caryophyllene, have been reported to have analgesic properties and may help alleviate pain. The are reported to be very effective on nerve pain.
• Anti-inflammatory effects: Terpenes like alpha-pinene and beta-caryophyllene are believed to possess anti-inflammatory properties, which could be beneficial for managing inflammation-related conditions.
• Antioxidant properties: Terpenes like beta-caryophyllene and humulene have demonstrated antioxidant capabilities, which can help neutralize harmful free radicals in the body.
• Sedative effects: Terpenes such as myrcene and linalool may promote relaxation and aid in sleep due to their sedative properties.
• Antibacterial and antifungal effects: Some terpenes in hemp, like alpha-pinene and terpinolene, have shown promise in combating certain bacterial and fungal infections.
• Certain terpenes, such as humulene, may play a role in appetite regulation and could potentially be beneficial for individuals with appetite-related issues.
