What is Turmeric?

Turmeric, scientifically known as Curcuma longa, is a flowering plant from the ginger family (Zingiberaceae). It is native to the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia, where it has been used for thousands of years both as a spice in cooking and as a traditional medicine. Turmeric is renowned for its vibrant yellow-orange color and its active compound called curcumin, which is responsible for many of its health benefits.

What are the Health Benefits of Tumeric?

Turmeric has been used in traditional medicine for its various medicinal properties. Its active compound, curcumin, is a potent antioxidant and has anti-inflammatory properties.

In traditional Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine, turmeric has been used to treat various ailments, such as digestive issues, joint pain, and skin conditions. Curcumin is known for its powerful antioxidant effects, which help neutralize free radicals that can damage cells and contribute to various chronic diseases.

Additionally, curcumin has anti-inflammatory properties, which may help reduce inflammation in the body and alleviate symptoms associated with inflammatory conditions. Health benefits include:

  • Supporting joint health and reducing symptoms of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Aiding in digestive health and relieving symptoms of indigestion and bloating.
  • Supporting heart health by improving cholesterol levels and reducing the risk of heart disease
  • Supporting liver health and promoting detoxification processes
  • Supporting brain health and cognitive function.
  • Potentially having anti-cancer properties, although more research is needed in this area.

Bioavailabilty and how to Consume Turmeric

Curcumin is a fat-soluble hydrophobic molecule, meaning it does not dissolve well in water but can readily dissolve in fats and oils. This property is one of the reasons why it is often recommended to consume curcumin with some form of fat, such as adding it to a meal that contains oil, to enhance its absorption in the body.

Our circumin extract is dissolved in C8 Capryllic Acid MCT oil, a single tri-glyceride fat isolated from cocounut oil. This way, significantly increase the bioavailabilty of the circumin and other active compounds in extract.

Turmeric products are often descibed as "activated" by the addition of pepper. In fact, this is done to increase the bioavailabilty of the circumin. We too add pepper to our extract.  The actrive ingreint in pepper is piperine:

  • Piperine inhibits certain enzymes in the liver and intestines that break down curcumin. These enzymes are responsible for metabolizing curcumin into forms that are easily excreted from the body. By inhibiting these enzymes, piperine slows down the metabolism of curcumin, allowing it to remain in the body for a longer time and increasing its absorption.
  • Piperine has been shown to increase the permeability of the intestinal wall, allowing substances like curcumin to pass through more easily.

Turmeric Terpenes

Turmeric contains various terpenes, which contribute to its distinctive aroma and flavor. Additionally, they may contribute to the potential health benefits of turmeric, as terpenes can have various therapeutic properties, such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and neuroprotective effects.

Many of the industrial processes used to extract circumin destroy the terpenes; our CO2 extraction method preserves their integrity. Some of the terpenes found in turmeric include:

  • Alpha-Turmerone: This terpene is one of the major constituents in turmeric and contributes to its characteristic fragrance. Alpha-turmerone has been studied for its potential health benefits, including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties
  • Beta-Turmerone: Another significant terpene in turmeric, beta-turmerone, is responsible for its aromatic properties. Like alpha-turmerone, it may also have potential health benefits, particularly related to anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects
  • Ar-Turmerone: Ar-turmerone is a minor terpene found in turmeric that adds to its overall aroma. It has been investigated for its potential neuroprotective properties and may have beneficial effects on brain health.
  • Curcumene: Curcumene is a group of terpenes, including α-curcumene and β-curcumene, found in turmeric. They contribute to the overall terpene profile of the spice.
  • Zingiberene is a terpene that is also present in ginger, which is closely related to turmeric. It contributes to the spiciness and aroma of both turmeric and ginger
  • Sabinene: Sabinene is a terpene that is found in trace amounts in turmeric. It is responsible for the woody, citrus-like scent of turmeric.
